We are incredibly proud to have supported and championed Breaking Boundaries: Women in Technical Rope Rescue, a powerful initiative recently featured in Mountain Rescue Magazine (Winter 2026)
This programme isn’t just about rope systems.
It’s about representation, confidence, leadership — and reshaping the future of technical rescue.
What Is Breaking Boundaries?
Breaking Boundaries was created to empower women involved in emergency services and rescue organisations to progress through the Rescue 3 Europe technical rope rescue pathway — from Rope Rescue Operator (RRO) through to Rope Rescue Operator Instructor (RROI).
Hosted and delivered by ISAR3 in Devon, the programme received over 150 applications for a limited number of places — a clear sign that the appetite for progression in technical rescue among women is strong.
Over months of intensive training — including work on industrial structures, dock environments, water towers and complex highline systems — the cohort developed not only technical capability, but deep professional networks and lifelong friendships.
By the end of the programme:
17 women qualified as Rescue 3 Rope Rescue Operator Instructors (RROI)
Participants represented Mountain Rescue and Lowland Rescue teams across the UK
A new model of rope rescue training delivery was established — focused on participation, repetition, confidence building and inclusion
This wasn’t about tokenism.
It was about raising standards, building capability and strengthening UK rescue as a whole.
Why It Matters
Technical rope rescue remains an area where women are underrepresented.
Breaking Boundaries deliberately moved away from a traditional performance-based training model to one centred on participation and repetition — building confidence, accessibility and long-term competence.
The impact is already clear:
Increased instructional capacity within rescue teams
Stronger internal training resilience
Greater representation in technical leadership roles
More inclusive pathways into rope rescue specialisms

SAR Store’s Role
SAR Store was proud to provide the official Breaking Boundaries clothing and to actively champion the programme throughout its development.
When the ISAR3 team began pushing this initiative forward, we immediately recognised what it stood for:

We supplied the Breaking Boundaries T-shirts worn by the cohort — but more importantly, we backed the vision.
Because this is exactly why SAR Store exists.

Participants described the programme as:
“A real milestone in my mountain rescue journey.”

“Hugely impactful… both personally and as a member of Lowland Rescue.”
And perhaps most powerfully:
“I’m very aware of how few women are represented in search and rescue, and it’s incredibly rewarding to help lead by example.”
That leadership effect will ripple through teams for years to come.
Looking Ahead
The story doesn’t stop here.
An additional 24 women are expected to participate in future cohorts, with modular delivery being developed to support mixed group training within Mountain and Lowland Rescue.
This isn’t a one-off initiative.
It’s the beginning of structural change.
